A City Built on Light
Madinah stood as a symbol of faith and unity, home to the deep bond between the Ansar and the Muhajirun. Its streets were shaped by prayer, guided by revelation, and blessed by the presence of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Yet even within this radiant city, certain corners remained vulnerable to distraction — spaces where worldly temptation crept in and Shaytan found an opening. The marketplace was one such place.
Allah warns us of this unseen influence in the Qur'an:
Indeed, he and his tribe see you from a place where you do not see them." We made the devils allies to those who do not believe." (Surah Al-A'raf, 7:27)
Trouble in the Marketplace
Madinah's marketplace was the pulse of daily life. From sunrise to sunset, it echoed with merchants calling out their wares — dates, fabric, spices — while buyers haggled and camels grumbled amid the crowd. It was a place of livelihood, where families secured their daily bread.
Then, without warning, something shifted. Scales began disappearing. Coin pouches vanished as if into thin air. People who arrived cheerful left in bursts of unexplained rage. Minor disagreements exploded into full-blown fights. Animals turned unusually difficult to handle, and goods spoiled or spilled for no apparent reason. A heavy, uneasy atmosphere settled over what had once been an ordinary trading ground, and rumors began to spread that something was deeply wrong.
The Muslims of Madinah, taught directly by the Prophet (peace be upon him), understood that such disturbances often pointed to the unseen world — the realm of the jinn, beings created from smokeless fire, some obedient to Allah and others rebellious. They remembered the Prophet's caution:
"Do not be the first to enter the marketplace and do not be the last to leave it, for it is the place of Shaytan and he erects his banner there." (Sahih Muslim)
It made sense. Wherever carelessness, greed, and distraction gathered, Shaytan and his followers would find fertile ground.

Abu Huraira Investigates
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) — a companion known for his deep devotion and vast knowledge of hadith — decided he would get to the bottom of it. One night, after the market had emptied and silence settled in, he stayed behind. Calming himself with remembrance of Allah, he began reciting Ayat al-Kursi:
"Allah — there is no god worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the One who sustains and upholds all of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep..." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)
The atmosphere shifted instantly. A piercing, otherworldly cry cut through the stillness, followed by a desperate voice: "Stop! Do not burn me with your recitation."
Unshaken, Abu Huraira demanded to know who — or what — was speaking. The trembling voice admitted it was a jinn. It confessed to being behind the chaos: "This marketplace is my home. I feed on arguments. I plant greed in people's hearts. I stir up anger. I steal whatever I can reach. And I take pleasure in watching people fight."
With that, the source of the market's troubles was finally exposed.
A Confrontation of Faith
Word of what happened spread quickly, and the other companions grasped the seriousness of it. The following night, Abu Huraira went back — this time with others who wouldn't let him face the unseen threat alone. They sat together, reciting the Qur'an in remembrance of Allah.

The jinn appeared again, this time furious. "Why won't you leave me be? I already told you I was gone!"
Rather than meeting hostility with force, Abu Huraira recited from Surah Al-A'raf, directly challenging the jinn's very nature. The creature recoiled, weakened by the strength of the words. In the exchange that followed, it admitted the truth about its "kingdom" — one built not on wealth, but on dishonesty, cheating, and broken trust between people.
"I thrived in lies... every dishonest scale, every unjust deal — that was my treasure. This market belongs to me because carelessness belongs to me, and your people have fed me well."
The companions pushed further, urging the jinn to leave for good and turn back to what was right. But pride held it back. "I will not submit. Corruption is my joy. I will not repent."
The Jinn's Final Warning
As the recitation of Ayat al-Kursi and other verses continued, the jinn's resistance finally broke. Before disappearing, it left behind an ominous message: "You can force me out today... but understand this — if your people slip back into carelessness, if dishonesty and injustice return, others like me will come back. There are many of us, and heedlessness will always feed us."
With one last cry, the presence was gone. Calm returned to the marketplace the next morning — but the experience left a lasting impression on everyone who had witnessed it.
The Lesson We Carry Forward
This story, passed down through generations, offers a timeless reminder: the fight against unseen harm never truly ends. It isn't won with weapons, but through sincere faith, constant remembrance of Allah, and a genuine commitment to fairness in every dealing.
